I aten't ded

But I am having far, far too much fun trying to walk off a metric ton of deem sum on San Francisco's sadistic hills to have made time for a full write-up. Suffice it to say that now I see how people can ignore the earthquake risk; this city is Borgesian in its beautiful dreamy strangeness (and that's without the contact highs). Walk and eat, photograph and shop, walk and eat some more, that's the order of the day. Sometimes we break it up by eating and then walking, shopping and then shooting.

If anyone is heading out thisaways soon, don't miss the chance to go to Christopher Elbow for the hot chocolate. Yes, it's $4.50 a cup, which seems kind of astronomical, but the soi disant whipped cream is actually creme fraiche drizzled over the froth on top of the cup, and the flavors in the Chinese five-spice or Venezuelan fiery cocoa will last you at least half an hour of stoned-out sippin' joy. I'm not sure but what this might be the sovereign specific for reconciling everyone to their fellow man.

the lady does not lie. that cocoa is the salve to heal many a wound. it takes me to my happy place. the most fun one can have, when fully clothed. and yes, you must stay fully clothed in the place. even if it tastes so good you desire to leave decorum elswhere, you must stay dressed. IE

When I went back on Friday, the counterfellers suggested that I try the coconut-curry version. It tasted like wicked Eastern debauchery, the kind of thing that gets banned by Nuggin. Full marks!

Staying dressed was never in question, given the chilly temps; not moaning audibly, however, was.

All right you fainting Epicures. How about some photos and not just of cocoa? Anything not currently covered in ice and snow is eligible. Minus 23 windchill here today. Not complaining, just saying.

Pics are on the way, and some of them came out halfway decent. Later today, I promise.

If I were truly qui mal y pense, I would gank some of Iosif's photos when he puts them up; was anyone else aware that it's late spring in New Zealand? Gaaah.

P.S. In the meantime, for gorgeous travel writing about warmer climes, head on over to Maciej's and find out why he's partly responsible for my joyful trip to Argentina last year (all true). One of my coworkers, who lived in China and its environs for a goodly while, read his essay on Hong Kong and liked it, but she was a bit bewildered by his description of the Lippo Center, "which looks like a pack of giant glass turtles humping a chimney." Then she pulled up a photo of same and laughed until she wept.
