Universally acknowledged

Boy bands are much the same, country of origin notwithstanding. But hit the mute button and watch this Nomin Talst vid of a family preparing for Naadam, the annual Mongolian festival of weaponry, sports, and horsemanship. Simple pleasures. The way I figure it, surely there's enough steppe that you can ride around the occasional passionately gesturing crooner crew without much fuss. Failing that, it looks like Pop is pretty good with the bow.

I was relieved when Junior got his pants on; after that I had a little narrative nervous breakdown.

WHO NEEDS PANTS. Heh. When you've got to haul your clothes around with the rest of your earthly possessions, pajamas probably seem like unnecessary weight.

The back story, such as it is, is that the Littlest Nomad there is going to be the jockey for the family's best horse at Naadam. (The Mongolians don't bother keeping their jockeys in eating disorders; they just pop their small children in the saddle and point to the horizon.) You also see the moppet and his older brother rasslin' in the Mongolian style.

The National Geographic did a lecture on travel in Mongolia a few years ago, and one of the speakers talked about seeing a rider get thrown just as he crossed the finish line. The kid's mother ran off to catch the horse, while the father ran out to grab his son, who turned out to be fine; in gratitude, the father lifted the child in each of the four cardinal directions, to the roars of the crowd.

It sounds pretty nifty.
